Central Michigan University Making A Difference

December 16th, 2009

This past semester, five students at Central Michigan University put on a photography contest as a fundraiser for their RPL (Recreation, Parks, and Leisure Services) class. All proceeds made from the event went to 11:11 AM, to support pediatric cancer research. The goal was to have at least 50 photos, at $5 each, entered into the contest. The event, titled PicMe! Photo Contest, was the first photo contest to ever be put on by an RPL class. The programmers not only reached their goal of 50 photographers, but made over $400 for 11:11 AM in the process as well. The actual event took place on November 9 in Central Michigan University’s Bovee University Center. Attendees were able to walk around and look at the photographs in the contest, buy a vote, or buy a raffle ticket. Raffle prizes included Red Wings tickets, CDs, gift cards to various businesses in the area, and tickets to the (then upcoming) Michigan versus Ohio State football game. All in all, the event was a success; participants and attendees had a good time and hopefully learned a little more about 11:11 AM in the process!

3333 Followers Reached!

October 13th, 2009

Photobucket

We reached our 3333 mark for our twitter contest!!! Thank you to everyone for helping out by spreading the word and RT’ing every tweet we sent out.  At first we were hesitant with that number but then realized a goal shouldn’t be easy to reach, it should take work.

We will be making our donation to Light the Night this week and will link everyone to it as soon as it has been made.

This donation means a lot to us because it will be in memory of our friend Matt.  A couple of us will also be walking in memory of him at Light the Night in Washington, DC this Saturday.

Thank you again. This could not have been done without each and every one of you.

For Matt:

October 8th, 2009

For Matt:

A few days ago, I received word that a dear friend of 11:11 A.M., Matt, had passed away after his long battle with cancer. I had first heard about Matt from Mao, who brought his story to me wondering if 11:11 A.M. could possibly do anything to help. At that moment, we decided that we would start the project we called “Cards for Matt.” Supporters of 11:11 A.M. from all around the country sent cards to Matt while he was in the hospital during the holiday season. They were hung up in his hospital room and I remember receiving pictures from his family; it was amazing to see the room covered in cards.

He emailed me a short time after telling me that the cards had truly made a difference in his life. Just reading that brought tears to my eyes. Matt and his family are amazing supporters of 11:11 A.M. and we are honored to call them friends.

His story has and will forever inspire us all at 11:11 A.M. Matt fought a hard battle but had a positive attitude through its entirety. Our previous donation to Light the Night was in honor of Matt and our next donation will be in memory of him.

Kathleen found this quote and I thought it was perfect to include in this entry:

“A great soul serves everyone all the time. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again.” -Maya Angelou

We send our thoughts and prayers to his family during this hard time.
